Three distinctive methods
The EMV Payment application
In this case the existing EMV payment application on the card is used to generate the dynamic passwords.
Using the PIN and additional data a pseudo transaction is performed with the EMV card.
In order to verify the password the same data is used to trigger the EMV back-end server for generating the password and allowing to verify the password.
The drawbacks of this apparently simple solution is the length of the passwords, which might be less acceptable for the customer. Moreover the complete EMV back-end server needs to be used for each password verification. Also the implementation can interfere with the deployment and installation of the EMV Back-End server.

The additional EMV authentication application
Instead of using the EMV payment application, an additional EMV authentication application is put on the card. This application is solely used for authentication.
The main benefits are in the more convenient password lengths (7 to 8 digits) and the use of a separate authentication application on the server, thus no need to involve the EMV Back-End server. Vasco can supply the separate authentication application on the server.
Both the EMV Payment application and the EMV Authentication application can fit together on the 2K smart cards.

The Digipass authentication
This is an alternative option, in which the customer uses his same Chip and PIN, where the passwords generated are according to the popular Digipass algorithm. Allowing for short password lengths and the use of the already proven Vacman Controller C-Library for integration. Moreover, if the bank already uses Digipass tokens, these tokens and the smart card solution with unconnected smart card readers can be used side-by-side in the same projects and roll outs.
