Rotterdam University secures access to critical information with DIGIPASS for Mobile and DIGIPASS GO 3 and GO 6
Employees of Rotterdam University have to log in through the central login system to get access to the different decentralized systems the educational institution works with. In order to guarantee that only employees get access to this important information such as exams and personal details, the University implemented VASCO’s authentication solution with one-time passwords (OTPs).The OTPs are generated with either DIGIPASS for Mobile, a DIGIPASS GO 3 or a GO 6.
Rotterdam University was looking for a way to grant secure access to sensitive information to its employees. On top of that they only wanted to grant a few people the ability to add, change or delete important information without impacting the existing software and application functionalities.
A solution that can be easily integrated in the central login system; the Novell e-directory with NMAS that is easy to use. After a one time login, the employee should have access to the multiple applications and systems.
The University of Rotterdam employees now use VASCO authentication technology to consult or adapt important information. Employees can choose between a hardware DIGIPASS GO 3 and GO 6 or a software DIGIPASS. The back-end consists of DIGIPASS plugin for NMAS.
Key Project Principles
Protecting sensitive information is considered very important. The university saves all the students’ and staff’s personal details in the online systems, as well as exam documentation, questions for future exams, test results, etc. In 2003 the University started the Novell e-directory project that required an authentication with static passwords to log in. Ultimately it was decided that all applications involving storage of personal details needed be secured with strong authentication. The University selected VASCO’s DIGIPASS to be able to log in as well as authenticate. Because of the fact that this dynamic password can only be used in a limited time frame, a hacker intercepting the password cannot reuse it due to the short life span of the password.
For centralized authentication which could be integrated easily with its Novell e-directory VASCO offered the University its DIGIPASS plugin via its NMAS (Novell Modular Authentication Service). As such, all systems were secured with strong authentication. On the client side the University selected DIGIPASS GO 3 and GO 6 that were user-friendly and, with an app installed on the employee’s smartphone, dynamic passwords can be generated on their own device. This is perceived as a significant advantage for users as well as the University.
From more than 3,000 users to more than 33,000 users
The advantage of an authentication method via a soft or hardware DIGIPASS is that employees do not have to come up with another complex password every quarter. Everyone now uses a one-time password to log in safely.
“The integration went smoothly. We had good support from VASCO and we went through the entire integration process without a problem," said Eric Kerkdijk, ICT Supervision and Operations Manager, Rotterdam University. As a result, students as well as employees enable, through DIGIPASS, a safe log-in. Over 33,000 students now have the ability to securely access the University’s platform.
